Trio Talweg

Sébastien Surel | violin

Éric-Maria Couturier | cello

Romain Descharmes | piano

Performers, improvisers and insatiable travelers, Romain Descharmes, Sébastien Surel and Éric-Maria Couturier have been hailed by the greatest halls in Europe and Asia.

‘Bewitching phrasings, a captivating fusion of timbres,’ (ConcertoNet); ‘Dazzling and refined,’ (Diapason); ‘A high-wire act, between control and abandon,’ (Classica); ‘The Talweg Trio are three assured presences, three torrents which bubble at the heart of the works, unmasking asperities and exposing emotion,’ (La nouvelle République).

A mature ensemble, the trio, since 2004, has carved out a large repertoire that embraces the history of music for piano trio and extends to works of today. Since receiving a Diapason d’or for their recording of the Tchaikovsky trio, the Talweg Trio have established themselves as fervent heirs of the piano trio tradition.

Each of their projects is an occasion to confront their personal experiences as they generate a common language, a play of colours and imagination, as well as a dramatic and lyrical impulse in the masterpieces of the repertoire. Through their culture of rhythm and improvisation, they open themselves up to unprecedented fields of exploration. Their collaborations with jazz, tango, rock and electro artists (including Tomás Gubitsch, Vincent Segal, David Linx and Jeff Mills) have made them a singular and sought-after ensemble.

The Talweg Trio has recorded the trios of Tchaikovsky, Schostakovitch, Brahms (in their entirety), Ravel, Turina, as well as contemporary premieres, receiving the highest honorary distinctions from the international press.
