Born from an encounter with Benjamin and Alice Paulin — guardians of Pierre Paulin’s timeless work — this 9th opus by the Quatuor Zaïde on NoMadMusic found its sonic setting in the Sounds like Paulin studio, where design and music reconnect with a shared history: that of the 1920s, when designers integrated the phonograph into the home and brought records into everyday life.
A bridge between minimalism and rock energy, between two worlds where tradition and modernity merge in simplicity, this album brings together Different Trains by Steve Reich — an iconic world-work about what History does to mankind — with Pulsing by Bryce Dessner, inspired by the roar of the Australian bush fires and the Notre-Dame fire. Two powerful works, driven by the same urgency: to echo the memory of humanity and of the Earth.

“Dans ces deux œuvres, le Quatuor Zaïde montre comment une expressivité audacieuse et une précision technique peuvent se fondre en une expérience d’écoute saisissante. Les interprétations se distinguent par un sens presque intuitif du contraste, de la couleur sonore et de la tension structurelle. Le traitement raffiné de la texture, du timing et de la dynamique souligne également le niveau d’un ensemble qui figure parmi l’élite internationale de la musique de chambre.”

“[Quatuor Zaïde’s] close connection to Dessner and their deep interest in this type of music are reflected in the rhythmic precision and consistency of their gripping interpretations, which nonetheless also highlight the constant subtle shifts through deliberate accents. Their interpretation of Bruce Dessner’s Pulsing makes the energy and intentions derived from rock music tangibly palpable. Reich’s Different Trains, alongside the Kronos Quartet’s version and the Mivos Quartet’s interpretation from three years ago, opens up new possibilities through their own unique perspective.”
